Threat of Extinction for Polar Bears due to Climate Change

Furthermore, the retreat of the ice is opening up the ocean to new shipping lanes and oil exploration. A quarter of the remaining oil and gas reserves on the planet are believed to lie under the Arctic seabed, and an international land grab is currently underway as countries such as Russia fight for the right to drill in the area. Both increased shipping and drilling pose further environmental threats to polar bears, which could be driven to extinction.
